The Catholic Understanding of Human
Sexuality
Fr. Don Goergen OP. October 6, 2009
Question: Would enjoying romance
novels be sinful? Why or not?
Fr. Goergen responds: Reading
romance novels in and of itself does not seem to me to be sin.
Of course I don't know how descriptive etc., but it seems as if
we are not talking about something pornographic, perhaps just
fairly sensual. The question may better be: Can I justify
using my time in this way? Does it nourish my soul? Does it harm
my soul? If it does harm, of course, then it would be
wrong. More likely it is a way of passing time and not
particularly helpful to one's spiritual life, but neither would
it be sinful. Perhaps we could put it in that category of
"imperfection," not as good as spiritual reading would be, but
not at the other end of the spectrum either. If it leads one to
sin, or if one senses spiritual harm, it would be better not to.
But
it strikes me as more likely harmless even if not fruitful.
