Membership on the
Faith Commission


Membership

Membership on the Waterloo Catholic Faith Formation Commission will consist of the following voting members:
• one representative elected from each parish;
• one representative elected by the Hispanic Community at Queen of Peace
  Parish;
• one representative nominated by each Pastoral Council and appointed by the
  Commission;
• the four pastors or a pastor chosen by the pastors;

The Commission will also include the following non-voting members:
• a parish Director of Faith Formation chosen by the parish Directors of Faith
  Formation;
• the Director of Adult Faith Formation;
• a youth minister chosen by the youth ministers. 

Officers

The Faith Formation Commission will choose a chair, vice-chair and secretary from its elected members.

The Commission will designate one member as its executive officer.

Term of Service

• The Waterloo Catholic Faith Formation Commission will meet monthly (except
  during July), unless otherwise determined by the Commission.
• Candidates elected in May 2010 will automatically serve for a 12-month transition
  period, starting June 1, 2010.
• In June, 2011 permanent terms of one-, two- and three-years will be assigned to
  Commission members by a method to be chosen by the Commission.
• Members are eligible to serve for two consecutive three-year terms.

Criteria for Candidates and Commission Members

• Candidates must be in full communion with the Catholic Church and registered
  members of the parish in which they seek election. (See Archdiocesan Policy
  9530.)
• Candidates must be in substantial agreement with the Church's faith formation
  mission; the strategy and goals of the Waterloo Catholic Faith Formation
  Commission
; and the vision of the Waterloo Pastoral Leaders.
• Individuals and spouses of individuals (including catechists) employed in a parish
  or inter-parish educational program, or students enrolled in a parish or inter-parish
  educational program, are not eligible for election to the Commission. (See
  Archdiocesan Policy 9531.)

Guiding Principles for Commission Members

Members of the Waterloo Catholic Faith Formation Commission will...
• acknowledge that religious formation and education programs are a significant
  expression of the teaching mission of the Catholic Church;
• agree to become more knowledgeable about their responsibilities and the
  mission of Catholic formation and education;
• agree to promote the vision, mission and goals of the Catholic faith formation
  expressed in the vision, mission and goals of the Waterloo Catholic Faith
  Formation Commission;
• be fully prepared for each meeting by doing the necessary reading, study and
  work required to make informed decisions;
• keep an open mind in all deliberations and offer alternate solutions whenever
  helpful;
• understand that election from a particular parish notwithstanding, Commission
  members must seek policies, programs and decisions which uphold the
  common good of the Catholic community in Waterloo;
• support the Commission's stated preference for making decisions by
  consensus;
• support the Commission's decisions even when they have personal reservations
  about those decisions;
• support the administrators of the formation and education programs under the
  jurisdiction of the Commission, and avoid intruding in administrative details
  unless requested to do so;
• acknowledge that they do not officially represent the Commission and are not
  able to speak on behalf of the Commission unless explicitly authorized to do so;
• disqualify themselves from discussion and votes on an issue where there is a
  conflict of interest with their family or business, or if the outcome would result in
  any pecuniary or material benefits to themselves;
• pray often for members of the Commission, administrators, students and
  participants in formation programs under the Commission's jurisdiction, and for
  the parish communities which the Commission serves.
