Focus on
the Homeless Nov. 6
The Cedar Valley Hospitality
House and the Cedar Valley Catholic Social Justice Network will
co-host an opportunity for members of the community who wish to
learn more about homelessness on Sunday, Nov. 6.
The evening will begin at with a short
orientation at 3:00pm at the Hospitality House, located at 1003
Mulberry Street in Waterloo.
Participants will have an opportunity to
take a walking tour of local places where homeless persons
congregate; listen to a narrative of "a day in the life of a
homeless person;" watch video interviews with Hospitality House
guests; and visit with representatives of local agencies which
serve homeless persons.
Joni Hansen, director of the Hospitality House, said the evening is
designed for adults and young adults who want to learn more
about people who are homeless in the local community
"A lot of us have only a vague idea that
there actually are homeless people in the Cedar Valley," Hansen
explained.
"We want members of the community to
realize that these are real people. Often they are people who
were our friends and classmates, colleagues at work, or
neighbors," Hansen said.
She added, "Most of them are homeless
because of circumstances beyond their control and a lack of
adequate resources."
The program will focus on who is
homeless, why people are homeless, what needs exist among local
homeless people, and what opportunities are available to address
those needs.
It is similar to one held in June.
Hansen said the video interviews with
Hospitality House guests were created by students from Wartburg
College in Waverly, who spent Spring Break as volunteers at the
Hospitality House.
