Undoing Racism Workshop.
May 16-18. Citizens for Undoing Racism sponsors this two-and-half day Undoing Racism Workshop
which helps participants address assumptions about how their work may be affected
by racism and also begin to understand the role of institutions
in exacerbating institutional racism for the poor and
communities of color. The workshop lays a foundation for
cultural competency and understanding of the most effective ways
to begin undoing racism and maintain accountability at work, in

NEW - Poverty Simulation.
June 11. 9:00am-Noon. Gerard Hall, Allen College, Waterloo.
Allen College and Iowa State University Extension co-host this
opportunity, which is open to a limited number of people from
the community. During this three-hour simulation experience
participants assume the roles of families living in poverty in
order to appreciate better the daily challenges which face low
income households. This experience is open to a limited

Local Opportunities
Garden Brigade Volunteers. Summer 2012. The Healthy Cedar Valley Coalition
is recruiting volunteers for three community gardens in the
local area: the Jesse Cosby Garden at 1112 Mobile St. in
Waterloo; the Cedar River Community Garden at E. 11th and
Sycamore St. in Waterloo; and the Cedar Falls Community Garden
on Lincoln Street in Cedar Falls. Volunteers must be available
once a month for two hours to help with soil preparation,
planting, watering, weeding and harvesting under the direction

Albanian Muslims and Jews.

Grout Museum of History & Science, Waterloo. The UNI Center for
Holocaust and Genocide Education and the Grout Museum are
co-sponsoring a traveling exhibit, BESA--Albanian Muslims Who
Saved Jews During World War II. The exhibit features 41
photographic images by Norman Gershman and documents how the
Muslim value of besa (honor) led to the rescue of 2,000 to 3,000

Race: Are We So Different? Through June 9.
University Museum, Cedar Falls. This continuing exhibit helps
visitors understand what race is and what it is not and gives
them the tools to recognize racial ideas and practices in
contemporary American life. The exhibit explores three themes:
the everyday experience of race, the contemporary science that
is challenging common ideas about race, and the history of this
idea in the United States. Monday-Friday 9:00-4:30 Saturdays

Catholic
Worker Prayer. St. Francis Catholic Worker Community in Waterloo
holds its monthly prayer on the first Tuesday evening of the
month. Prayer begins at 6:15pm at the Catholic Worker

Isidore. May 12.
New Hope Catholic Worker Farm near LaMotte, Iowa plans a day of
activities to celebrate the feast of St. Isidore, the patron of
farmers. Events include an (optional) opportunity for labor, a farm tour,
evening prayer, potluck dinner, a bonfire and music. For

Introduction to Permaculture. May 28-June 1. New Hope Catholic Worker Farm &
Agronomic University, LaMotte IA. This five-day ecological
design course facilitated by Adam Campbell will help
participants learn the art and science of
creating healthy and resilient human environments which are
abundant in food, water, shelter, energy and community. Housing
will be in tents. Registration fee of $50 per person covers the

Sugar Creek Retreat. Sept. 14-16. The 2012 Midwest Catholic
Worker Cathering at Sugar Creek near Waukee in Cedar County,
Iowa will be hosted by the St. Louis Catholic Worker community.
Details for the annual event are pending. Last year's event
attracted almost 200 participants from 28 Catholic Worker
