Our Mission
The
Catholic Parishes in Waterloo are committed to providing
education, formation and real life experiences which help
Catholic adults understand and practice the principles of
Catholic Social Teaching.
The
Adult Formation Office cooperates with the Social Justice
Committees in the parishes, other local churches and social
justice organizations, diocesan and
national organizations to coordinate formation, education and
personal involvement in social action which is consistent with
the principles of Catholic Social Teaching

Social Justice Advent Retreat
December 6, 2008
Waterloo Center for the Arts
225 Commercial Street, Waterloo.
The
Waterloo Catholic Worker House and Cedar Valley Catholic Social
Justice Network will co-sponsor a Social Justice Advent Retreat on Saturday,
Dec.6, 9:00am to 4:00pm. Frank Cordaro, co-founder of the Des Moines
Catholic Worker Community and Catholic peace activist, will
examine the Christmas narratives in the Gospels of Luke and
Matthew.
The
retreat is open to the public. Registration requested.
Suggested fee: $25.00 per person/$15.00 for students (includes
lunch).

Iowa Institute for Social Action
January 18-19, 2009
St. Francis of Assisi Church
West Des Moines, Iowa
Antonio B. Cube, Jr., national director
of the U.S. Catholic bishops' Justice for Immigrants
Campaign, will be the keynote speaker for the Sunday session
of the 2009 Iowa Institute for Social Action. The
keynote for Monday's session will be delivered by a panel of
ministers involved in aiding immigrants in Postville, Iowa.

Waterloo
JustFaith Study Group
Meeting Winter/Spring, 2009
JustFaith is an intensive adult
formation and education process which uses study, discussion,
prayer, and experience to help participants grow in their
understanding and commitment to the principles of Catholic
Social Teaching. The program was created by Catholic Charities
USA and has been used in parishes throughout the United States.
Many JustFaith participants say the experience has a profound
impact on their personal and spiritual lives.
The Catholic Parishes in Waterloo
and Waterloo Catholic Worker will sponsor a JustFaith study
group during the coming year. The group will begin meeting in
January, 2009 and be guided by Fran Fuller, a member of the
Waterloo Catholic Worker House staff, who has participated in
and facilitated JustFaith groups in Des Moines. Cost of
participation is $150 for books and supplies.

Cedar Valley
Catholic Social Justice e-Newsletter
is a weekly e-newsletter of social justice news, opinions,
resources and social action opportunities.

“Cool Catholics”
is
a committee of local Catholics who are committed to faith-based
environmental awareness and action to address global climate
change. The committee sponsors workshops, provides information,
and organizes public action to reduce
human contributions to global warming.

Habitat for Humanity.
The Catholic Parishes support the efforts of
Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity by providing volunteers of
all ages to help build new homes with needy families in our
community. The parishes organize work crews on the second
Saturday of every month and on Tuesday of any week.

Immigration Reform. The Catholic Parishes and the
Cedar Valley Catholic Social Justice Network are involved in a
variety of efforts to develop and support comprehensive reform
of the nation's immigration laws.

Issues
Iowa Institute for Social Action is a two-day conference
co-sponsored by the Catholic dioceses of Iowa for adults and
young adults interested in social justice. It includes
speakers, small-group workshops, and an opportunity to network
with social justice activists from around the state. The
Institute is held on the third Sunday and Monday of January
in
West Des Moines.

JustFaith
is an intensive adult formation and education process which uses study, discussion, prayer, and experience to help
participants grow in their understanding and commitment to the
principles of Catholic Social
Teaching. The JustFaith formation process is highly
recommended for individuals who are, or wish to become, more
active in the church’s ministry of social justice and peace.

Stewardship of the Earth
is a five-week bible study which examines the biblical
foundation for environmental stewardship. It combines the
opportunity for personal study and group discussion, which leads
to a prayerful and transforming response for individuals who are
especially interested in the
challenges of global climate change.

Study Circles on Racism and Race Relations are inter-racial study groups designed to help participants
identify their own experience, concerns, opinions and fears
about race, hear other participants' experiences and concerns,
consider a wider variety of views on racial issues, and explore
strategies for personal and community action. The groups meet
for five weeks under the direction of professionally trained
facilitators.
