Winter at the Cellar Features 'Catholicism' Series
The Catholic Parishes in Waterloo "Winter at the Cellar"
enrichment series for adults and young adults will conclude on
Tuesday, Feb. 7, with a segment on "The Communion of Saints" from Fr. Robert Barron's newly released documentary
Catholicism. The series now airing on EWTN and public
television stations across the country examines what Catholics
believe in a stunning visual format which illustrates the art,
architecture, literature and rituals of the Catholic tradition.
The program will include an opportunity to view and discuss a video presentation. Winter
at the Cellar sessions are held at the Cellar Lounge, 320 E. 4th Street, in
downtown Waterloo and are open to the public.

Social Justice Week Planned at St. Stephen's
St. Stephen the Witness Catholic Student Center in Cedar Falls
will observe its annual Social Justice Week Feb. 13-17.
Dave Cushing, director of adult formation for the Catholic
Parishes in Waterloo, will lead a discussion of “Living a Social
Justice Life” on Monday at 7:00pm; other events during the week
include a Tuesday evening prayer service, “Love
as God Intended” at 9:00pm; Prime Time Liturgy “A Call to Love
and Justice” on Wednesday at 9:00pm; a presentation of
Entertaining Angels, the Story of Dorothy Day on Thursday at
6:30pm and Social Justice Monopoly at 7:00pm on Friday.

"Final Wishes" Workshop Feb. 15 at St. Edward
The Catholic
Parishes in Waterloo and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare will
sponsor a Final Wishes workshop February 15 at St. Edward
Parish. The workshop will examine the medical, personal, emotional and spiritual issues which
arise at the time of a serious illness or at the end of
life and helps participants identify and express how they want
to be treated if they are seriously ill and unable to speak for
themselves. The workshop will be held 1:30-3:30pm in the
church hall (church basement) at St. Edward and is open to the
public.

Introduction
to Lent Planned for Busy Catholics
The Catholic Parishes in Waterloo will sponsor a
short introduction to Lent for Catholic adults and young adults
who want to participate more intentionally in this important
liturgical season. "The Busy Catholic's Guide to Lent"
will review the origin and purpose
of the Lent, various components of Lenten observance today,
traditional Lenten devotions like the Stations of the Cross, and
opportunities for Lenten study and prayer in the local
community. The one-hour presentation will be held on
Monday, Feb. 20, 7:00-8:00pm in O'Hagan Hall (church basement)

'Hungering
for Justice' is Lenten Retreat Theme
The annual Social Justice Lenten Retreat co-hosted
by the Cedar Valley Catholic Social Justice Network and the
Waterloo Catholic Worker will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25,
9:00am-3:30pm in O'Hagan Hall at Sacred Heart Parish.
"Hungering for Justice--Fasting in Solidarity" is the theme for
this year's retreat, facilitated by Brian Terrell of the Des
Moines Catholic Worker community. Terrell will reflect on his
experience participating in the ten day fast sponsored by
Witness Against Torture and discuss the role of traditional
Lenten practices like fasting and self-sacrifice in work for
social justice. $20/adults; $15/students (includes lunch).

Lenten
Enrichment Series Will Focus on Ways to Pray
"Pray All-Ways" is the theme for the Waterloo parishes' Lenten
enrichment series for adults and young adults. The
four-part series will give participants an opportunity to enrich
their personal prayer by learning more about the various styles
of prayer available in the Catholic tradition. The series
will meet on Monday evenings, 6:30 to 8:15pm, in the Church Hall
at St. Edward Parish starting February 27. Each evening
will include a presentation or experience of three different
types of personal or group prayer, including Centering Prayer,
the Divine Mercy Chaplet, Praying with Music and Labyrinth
Prayer. The series is free and open to the public.

Third Season
Planned for Lenten Musical Production
Agnus Dei Ministry, a group of musicians from Catholic parishes
in Waterloo and nearby communities, has announced the third
season of performances for its original presentation, "Lenten
Lessons and Prayers--A Musical Journey with Christ." The
80-minute program compiled by David Berns, includes a
combination of inspirational music and scripture depicting the
life, passion and death of Jesus. This year's schedule
includes nine performances at local churches and
Columbus High School. The first performance is Feb. 19 at
American Lutheran Church in Jesup.

Interfaith Council Plans February Open Houses
The Cedar Valley Interfaith Council will sponsor open houses at the Mennonite Church and First Presbyterian Church in
Cedar Falls on Sunday, Feb. 19. Both churches will be open
from 2:00 to 4:00pm, and visitors are invited to tour both to
learn more about history, traditions and beliefs of each faith
community. This is the second in a series of open houses sponsored by the
Interfaith Council to mark the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and the continuing
need for greater understanding among local faith communities.

Torture is
Discussion Topic at February Forum
Dr.
Francis Degnin
from the Department of Philosophy and World Religions at UNI
will discuss ethical and pragmatic issues involved in the use of
torture at the Canterbury Forum on Sunday, Feb. 26, at St. Luke
Episcopal Church in Cedar Falls. Dr. Degnin will examine how
torture fits into human psychology and the evolution of human
values as well as what the use of torture teaches us about
humans as moral beings. The Forum

The Catholic Parishes in Waterloo will sponsor a
Listening Session for inactive, alienated, discouraged or former
Catholics and Catholic Seekers on Wednesday, March 7,
7:00-8:30pm in the Board Room at Kimball Ridge Center (former Schoitz Hospital) in Waterloo. This is an informal and
non-threatening opportunity for anyone who wishes to discuss
their past, present or future relationship to the Catholic faith
community in a discreet, non-judgmental environment.

St. John's
Theology Day Presentation Planned on Hope
St. John’s School of Theology and the Catholic Parishes in Waterloo will
co-host a Theology Day presentation by Fr. Dale Launderville,
OSB, on Thursday, March 8, 6:00-9:00pm at American Martyrs
Retreat House in Cedar Falls. Fr. Launderville will discuss how
promises God made to our ancestors are the foundation for hope
in today's world. Fr. Dale teaches at St. John’s School of
Theology/Seminary and the College of Saint Benedict and St. John’s
University in Collegeville, Minnesota. He is a frequent contributor to the
"Faith Alive"
series in The Witness and other diocesan newspapers. The
presentation is the first in St. John's Theology Day series to
be presented in Iowa. The program is free and open to the

Cedar Valley CEW Weekends Planned in March
The Christian Experience Weekend (CEW) is a
personal and spiritual renewal experience for adult and young
adult Christians who want to begin or renewal their relationship
to Jesus Christ and the Christian community. The weekend features witness talks by lay people,
and opportunities for discussion, prayer, private reflection,
Reconciliation and Eucharist. The weekend begins Friday
evening and ends Sunday afternoon.

Beginning
Experience Weekend Scheduled March 16-18
A Beginning Experience Weekend for single persons recovering from
loss will be held March 16-18 at Shalom Retreat Center in
Dubuque. This weekend experience is designed for
individuals of any age or faith who have experienced a loss due
to a separation, divorce or the death of a loved one. The
weekend helps participants emerge from the darkness of grief and
move into the future with renewed hope. Experienced
facilitators provide encouragement and support for individuals
who wish to turn the pain of loss into an experience of positive

Canterbury Forum Will Focus on the Devil
"The
Devil in Scripture and Faith" is the topic of the Canterbury
Forum to be held on Sunday, March 25, at St. Luke Episcopal

devil is depicted in Hebrew, Inter-testamental and Christian
scriptures and the writings of the early Church Fathers and how
