Introducing

A Mini-Retreat Series

Co-hosted by the Catholic Parishes in Waterloo
and American Martyrs Retreat House

Retreating offers participants an opportunity to interrupt the normal busyness of everyday routines in order to spend some time in study, quiet reflection and prayer.  Retreats provide an opportunity for spiritual renewal, reaffirmation of one's core values, and a prayerful encounter with God, oneself, and others.

This series of Sunday afternoon mini-retreats is designed for adults and young adults who are not able to participate in longer retreats but wish to spend some time nurturing their spiritual life and deepening their faith.

Each mini-retreat begins at 12:30pm and concludes at 3:30pm. The format may vary from retreat to retreat but will generally include a presentation, time for reflection, discussion and prayer, and in some cases celebration of the Eucharist or Reconciliation.

Suggested fee: $10.00 for adults; $5.00 for students.  (Overnight accommodations Saturday or Sunday evening and meals are available at the Retreat House for an additional charge.)

The Mini-Retreat Series is made possible in part by a grant from the
Archbishop Kucera Center for Catholic Intellectual
and Spiritual Life at Loras College

Winter/Spring 2010 Series

“Eucharist: A Taste of God”
Sunday, January 24, 2010
Presented by

Sister Connie Howe RSM

This retreat is an invitation to enter more deeply into the mystery of the Eucharist. What is the gift that Eucharist offers us?  What does Eucharist demand of us?  Are we truly open to the transformative presence of God when we gather for Eucharist?

Sister Connie Howe RSM is the pastoral associate for the Community of Disciples Cluster consisting of St. Mary Parish in Eldora and St. Mark Parish in Iowa Falls.  She grew up on a farm in central Iowa and entered the Sisters of Mercy of Cedar Rapids in 1971. “The Eucharist--A Celebration
of a People Never Before Known”

Sunday, February 21, 2010
Presented by
Fr. Ardel Barta

When the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt they said to God, "If you will be our God we will be your people". God said "OK, I want you to be a people never before known where there is no alienation and you will love each other as I love you."  This retreat will explore Jesus freed us from our sins, renewed that Covenant, and gave us the power of the Holy Spirit.

Fr. Ardel Barta is currently the Sacramental Priest for St. Mary Parish, Urbana, St. Mary Parish, Vinton and Sacred Heart Parish, Walker.  He was born in 1937 and ordained in 1963.  He has ministered at St. Cecilia Parish in Ames, St. Pius X Parish in Cedar Rapids, Nativity, St. Columbkille, St. Patrick and St. Mary Parishes in Dubuque, St. John Parish in Independence, Blessed Sacrament Parish in Waterloo and St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Webster City.

“The Post-Resurrection Appearances--
Living Presence of the Risen Lord”

Sunday, April 11, 2010
Presented by
Connie May

The Gospels present us with a series of appearances by Jesus after the Resurrection.  These accounts represent the Christian community's first encounter with the Risen Lord -- and prototypes for our own experience of the Risen Lord still present among us.  This retreat experience will explore the original post-resurrection experiences, what they teach us about our own encounter with the risen Jesus and our own resurrected lives.

Connie May has taught Scripture for the past thirty years.  She currently facilitates two weekly study groups and produces a weekly lectionary guide.  She served as a pastoral associate at St. Edward Parish in Waterloo and has served as a chaplain in hospitals, a prison, and a home care hospice.  She has a Masters degree in Theology from Aquinas Institute of Theology and is chaplain emeritus of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.  She and her husband live in Cedar Rapids and are the parents of four sons and eleven grandchildren.
