Local Opportunities

Prayer for Christian Unity.  Jan. 24. 9:00pm. UNI Commons Ballroom. The Campus Ministry Association at the University of Northern Iowa and St. Stephen the Witness Catholic Student Center will co-host an ecumenical prayer service which coincides with the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Jan. 18-25. Participants are asked to bring hats, gloves, canned goods, paper towels, toilet paper, or personal care items such as shampoo, shaving cream, and disposable razors which will donated to the Cedar Valley Hospitality House.  Contact Shannon Duffy at 319-266-9863.

Race Exhibit.  Feb. 6-June 9.  UNI Museums, Cedar Falls. “Race—Are We So Different?”is the title of a traveling exhibit created by the American Anthropological Association in collaboration with the Science Museum of Minnesota.  It examines the everyday experience of race, the contemporary science that is challenging common ideas about race, and the history of this idea in the United States.

Social Justice Week.  Feb. 13. 7:00pm. Commons at St. Stephen the Witness Catholic Student Center, Cedar Falls.  Dave Cushing, director of adult formation for the Catholic Parishes in Waterloo and coordinator of the Cedar Valley Catholic Social Justice Network, will lead a discussion on Living Social Justice in Everyday Life as part of Social Justice week activities.  Contact Shannon Duffy at 319-266-9863.

NEW - Human Rights Conference.  Feb. 17. 7:00am-3:00pm. Allen College, Waterloo.  “Practicing Hospitality in a World of Difference” is the theme for the 13th annual Cedar Valley Human Rights Conference.  The featured speaker is Dr. Robert A. Franklin, Assistant Professor in the School of Communication, Fine Arts and Media at the University of Nebraska, Omaha and Director of Media Operations at KVNO-FM and UNO-TV.  Enrollment is limited.  $30 (includes breakfast and lunch).  For registration call 319-291-4441.

Social Justice Lenten Retreat.  Feb. 25.  9:00am-3:30pm. O'Hagan Hall, Sacred Heart Parish, Waterloo.  Brian Terrell of the Des Moines Catholic Worker community will facilitate this year's retreat co-hosted by the Cedar Valley Catholic Social Justice Network and the Waterloo Catholic Worker. Contact Dave Cushing at 319-234-9912.

Racial Categorization.  Feb. 28.  7:00-8:30pm. UNI Museums, Cedar Falls.  Drs. Kim and Otto MacLin, Professors of Psychology at UNI will discuss how the human brain processes racial information and the impact of racial categorization on stereotypes and prejudice.  This program is held in conjunction with the exhibit Race--Are We So Different.

U.S. Military in the Post-9/11 World.  Feb. 29.  Room 002, Sabin Hall. UNI.  Andrew Bacevich, an expert on U.S. foreign policy and military affairs, will discuss the forces that have shaped U.S. national security and the rise of a "perpetual war" that affects the economy, society and politics of the United States, and our place in the world. Bacevich is a retired army colonel and professor at Boston University who writes frequently for various publications, including Commonweal and America.  Contact: Philip Mauceri  at 319-273-2221 (email philip.mauceri@uni.edu  ).

Torture and World Community.  March 1.  3:00pm. TBA/UNI.  Prof. Marjorie Cohn, author of The United States and Torture: Interrogation, Incarceration, and Abuse (2011) and Rules of Disengagement: The Politics and Honor of Military Dissent (2009), will be speak on the problems of torture and the role it plays in destroying the possibility of world community.  Cohn is professor of law at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego and immediate past president of the National Lawyers Guild.

Catholic Worker Prayer.  St. Francis Catholic Worker Community in Waterloo holds its monthly prayer on the first Tuesday evening of the month.  Prayer begins at 6:15pm at the Catholic Worker House, 321 East Eighth St.  Contact the Worker at 319-232-2116.

Regional Opportunities

Revolution of the Heart:  The Spirituality of Dorothy Day.  Feb. 6, 7:00 – 9:00pm. Shalom Retreat Center, Dubuque.  Amanda Osheim, Asst. Prof. of Practical Theology at Loras College, will be the featured speaker for a discussion of the spirituality of Dorothy Day.  Offering: $10. Registration deadline: Feb. 3.  Contact Shalom at 563-582-3592.

Mardi Gras Event.  Feb. 18.  7:30-10:30pm. Bishop Dingman Dinner.  March 31.  Bishop Thomas Gumbleton and Joshua Casteel will be keynote speakers at the annual Bishop Maurice J. Dingman Dinner sponsored by Catholic Peace Ministry in Des Moines.  Bishop Gumbleton is the retried auxiliary bishop of Detroit; Casteel is a former Army interrogator and conscientious objector who is author of Letters from Abu Ghraib.  Contact Catholic Peace Ministry at 515-255-8114 (email  jjwcpm@yahoo.com ).

Nonviolence Workshop. April 11. 9:00am-4:00pm. Prairie Retreat Center near Wheatland, Iowa.  Sr. Caridad Inda CHM will conduct this one-day workshop on nonviolent resistance based on the work of Gene Sharp.  Sharp believes that hierarchical institutions depend on the obedience of the governed and will change or fail if the governed resist.  Fee: $20 (includes lunch).
