Local Opportunities

Sustainability in Iowa -- Author Connie Mutel will discuss the transformation of Iowa's extensive tallgrass prairie into cropland, explore the results of this conversion and suggest how to reverse the negative effects at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Center for Energy and Environmental Education. Mutel is the author of the recently published "The Emerald Horizon: The History of Nature in Iowa." The event is free to the public. For more information contact Ryan Welch at < rwelch@uni.edu >.

Advent Retreat -- "Who Is In?  Who Is Out? The All-Inclusive Kingdom of God" is the theme for the annual Advent Social Justice Retreat Dec. 5 in Waterloo.  The retreat facilitator will be peace activist, speaker and writer Tom Cordaro.  Cordaro has been active in the work of Pax Christi USA, a national Catholic peace organization, and is author of  Be Not Afraid--An Alternative to the War on Terror.  The retreat will be held 8:30am to 3:00pm in O'Hagan Hall (church basement) at Sacred Heart Parish in Waterloo and is open to the public.  Registration fee is $20/person ($15/students and seniors) and includes lunch.

Regional Opportunities

Grinnell Bus to SOA -- Tickets are available for the student bus from Grinnell College going to the annual vigil at the School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia.  The bus leaves Grinnell at 5:00pm on Nov. 19 and returns by 6:00am Nov. 23.  Suggested price is $150.00 and includes camping Friday and Saturday nights at Roosevelt State Park.  For information contact Micah Bot-Miller at
