MORE INFORMATION

At its core, global climate change is not about economic theory
or political platforms, nor about partisan advantage or interest
group pressures.  It is about the future of God's creation and the
one human family.  It is about protecting both "the human
environment" and the natural environment.  It is about our human
stewardship of God's creation and our responsibility to those who
come after us.

--United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Global Climate Change: A Plea for
Dialogue, Prudence, and the Common Good,
2001.

What are Cool Catholics?

Cool Catholics are members of the Catholic Parishes in Waterloo who are committed to faith-based environmental awareness and action to address global climate change.
Cool Catholics are affiliated with Cool Congregations, a stewardship program designed to help faith communities and people of faith recognize and respond to their responsibility for the care of God’s creation.
Cool Congregations is sponsored by Iowa Interfaith Power and Light, a joint initiative of Muslim, Christian, Jewish and other faith communities in Iowa, including the Catholic diocese of Des Moines and the National Catholic Rural Life Conference. Iowa Interfaith Power and Light is one of 25 state projects in the Interfaith Power and Light network organized by The Regeneration Project to educate faith communities about global warming, promote renewable energy, energy efficiency and conservation.

What Do Cool Catholics Do?

Our purpose is to help individuals, families and our faith communities understand and accept their moral responsibility as stewards of God's creation.
We sponsor workshops, provide information, and organize public action
to help individuals, families and the community understand their impact on the environment.

Cool Catholics work on several levels:
on the congregational level, we encourage parish leaders to assess and reduce
   the congregation’s corporate contribution to global warming;
on the individual level, we work with individual church members and families to
help them assess and reduce their personal contribution to global warming
by
implementing a wide range of practical (and in many cases, inexpensive)
actions which reduce carbon dioxide emissions, reduce consumption of fossil
fuels, improve energy efficiency, and reduce overall energy use.

on the community level, we work to educate the public about environmental
stewardship and to organize support for environmentally responsible policies.

How Can I Get Involved?

You can get involved by attending a Cool Catholics workshop and making a personal commitment to reduce energy consumption.

If you are a member of the Catholic parishes in Waterloo, you can join our Cool Catholics committee and help plan and conduct information programs in the parishes.

Check the calendar for this month's Cool Catholics meeting.
