The University of Dayton
Catechist Formation Program

The Catechist Formation Program is designed for Catholic school teachers, catechists and other interested adults who want to grow in their understanding of the Catholic faith.

Participants read and discuss a series of articles prepared by faculty at the University of Dayton (OH) and published each month during the school year in Catechist Magazine.  This is a convenient and affordable way for teachers, catechists, parents and grandparents to increase their knowledge, enrich their faith, and discover new ways to pass on faith to their students, children or grandchildren.

A continuing education unit (CEU) or graduate credit is available to participants from the University of Dayton.

2011-2012 Theme:
Spirituality: Grounding
in the Mystery of God

The 21st century is the threshold for a refreshed understanding and appreciation of the meaning and relationship of spirituality and religion.  There appears to be an inner longing for a sense of the Holy, Transcendent, or God.

Science, technology and progress have not quenched people’s deeper thirsts for meaning, purpose and direction in life. The ultimate questions continue to haunt the human spirit. We hear voices, such as:
“I am into spirituality not religion”
“Religion is meaningless in the 21st century”
“Religion is the catalyst of violence today"
"I am opting for a deeper, more personal and meaningful encounter with God"
"I am more spiritual, not religious.”

Catholic educators and catechists are facing a radically new set of challenges. How can we speak about the relationship and significance of spirituality and religion within a new cultural context?

During our 2011-2012 series we are exploring various pathways into deepening a positive and proactive approach for understanding spirituality in light of these and other questions being raised.  Our Catholic tradition is filled with experiences and narratives reflecting the spiritual quest of individuals and communities through time.  Today is no different. Our catechists, Catholic school teachers and students are on a quest. We hope this series will enlighten our readers into a deeper grounding in the mystery and communion with God.
