to Forgiveness”

Description of the Workshop 

   This four-part workshop, based on the book by Ernie Larsen, provides a new strategy for identifying and addressing the resentment and rage which keep us from moving toward forgiveness.  It is designed for single adults and others who want to reclaim the power that anger has over their lives and move toward a new serenity. 

   Participants who wish may purchase copy of the book, From Anger to Forgiveness by Ernie Larsen, from Friend to Friend Christian Book Store.  However, it is not necessary to have a copy of the book to participate in the workshop.

Content of the Sessions

   Here is an outline of what will be covered in the four sessions:

Week 1/October 9
Define Anger
Identify the faces of our anger
Learn the six skills for a ‘happy’ life
Two exercises that help us get a thorough understanding of anger
Plenty of Discussion

Week 2/October 16
Examine ten defenses against seeing the truth about our anger
Discuss family resentments
Learn to define and set personal boundaries
Ten situations that teach shame and induce anger

Week 3/October 23
Defining forgiveness which is a spiritual reality
Developing a forgiving state of mind
Discussing who does forgiveness help
Identify mindsets that block forgiveness

Week 4/October 30
Learn the principles of reconciliation
Identify the steps toward reconciliation
Learn that probloems with anger are not all rooted in the past
Discover how to Anger Proof our lives
Learn the 8 Steps to Serenity

About the Facilitator

   Jane Nelson is a licensed independent social worker who has a BA in Social Work from Marycrest College and an MA in Social Work from the University of Iowa. She received training in mediation from the Iowa Peace Institute and training in the Americans with Disability Act.  Jane has experience as a social worker for the Johnson County Department of Social Services; program director for the University of Iowa’s Program for Assistive Technology (IPAT); director of the Black Hawk Center for Independent Living in Waterloo; and instructor at Hawkeye Community College. Jane has worked with homeless people and battered women and children as a Catholic Worker in Bloomington IL and Davenport IA.  She now conducts Empowerment, a private practice in Waterloo, where she focuses on individual therapy, advocacy, mediation, facilitation, group work and private counseling.  Jane is also a volunteer at the Jubilee Free Medical Clinic in Waterloo.

What to Expect

   If you choose to participate in From Anger to Forgiveness you should expect:
• to grow in your understanding of, and ability to respond constructively to, the
  personal, social, emotional and spiritual effects of anger and resentment;
• to be treated with respect and understanding at all times;
• to be encouraged and supported, not criticized or judged;
• to trust that your opinions, insights, convictions and experiences will always
  be treated with reverence and confidentiality; 
• never to be forced to say or do anything which would be uncomfortable,
  dishonest or embarrassing to yourself or another person.

   Experiences, opinions and insights shared during the group discussion will be treated with confidentiality and should not be repeated or alluded to, even anonymously, outside the group.

Facilitator's Role.  It is the role of the facilitators to support, encourage and guide the group's discussion.  It is also the facilitators' responsibility, if necessary, to determine when an individual's continued participation in the process is no longer sufficiently beneficial to the group or individual.  Facilitators must honor the confidentiality of the group's discussion unless doing so would place a member of the group, other participants, or other individuals in physical or legal jeopardy.
