Adult Faith Formation Report

A. Initiation and Evangelization

 

1. Rites of Christian Initiation and Reception

a. Information meetings are scheduled Sept. 8 and 19 for individuals interested in

    the RCIA or RCRA.

b. About five candidates have been participating in the pre-RCIA sessions this

    summer.

c. RCIA Inquiry begins Sept. 29 and will meet at St. Edward.

d. RCRA Fall series begins Sept. 23 and will meet at Queen of Peace.

e. A Mystagogia session for individuals initiated last spring is scheduled for Sept.

   15.

2. Inactive and Alienated Catholics (Strategic Plan E.4.d)

a. The first of five Listening Sessions for Inactive Catholics will be Oct. 20 at

    Kimball Ridge.

3. Single Adults

a. Friends in Faith Single Mingles during the summer consisted of picnics at Dave

    Cushing's and Teri Burd's homes.  The regular schedule of Mingles on the

    second Saturday of the month begins Sept. 11 at June's Restaurant in Elk Run

    Heights.  Locations will alternate this year between Junie's and Beeman's

    Chuckwagon in Cedar Falls.

b. An information meeting for Divorce and Beyond is scheduled for Sept. 9.  The

    ten-week series will meet on Thursday evenings starting Sept. 16 at St. Edward

    Parish.

B. Adult Formation, Enrichment and Spiritual Growth

 

1. Adult Formation and Enrichment

a. Seven persons were enrolled in the Summer Scripture series taught by Bill

    Mulcahey.

b. A total of 127 people participated in the five Summer at the Cellar programs this

    summer.  Attendance ranged from a low of 7 to a high of 40.

c. The Catholic Readers Book Club will begin meeting on Sept. 13 at Queen of

    Peace.

d. First Tuesday will begin meeting on Sept. 7.  This year I am making an effort to

    form a separate group for younger couples.

e. I will be offering to facilitate a monthly discussion for any teacher, catechist or

    adult who wishes to participate in the University of Dayton's Catechist

    Formation Program.

f. Richard Montaldo will be the first speaker in our Catholic Speakers Series, 

   Sept. 16.

g. Eric Stromberg, the faith formation director at St. Mary's in Waverly, will

    facilitate an 8-week bible study, "A Tour Through the Bible" for our parishes this

    fall if a sufficient number of people register.

h. Three Final Wishes workshops are scheduled during the coming year.

i. I am hoping to be able to schedule a retreat/workshop on the St. John Bible

   during Lent and am trying to arrange another local workshop with Fr. Harrington

   during the coming year.

 

2. Spiritual Growth (Strategic Plan E.2.a, E.2.b)

a. An information meeting for people interested in Bridges to Contemplative Living

    or Companions on the Journey is scheduled for Sept. 28.

b. We will be co-hosting a fall series of Sunday afternoon mini-retreats at American

    Martyrs.  The first mini-retreat, "Music As a Door to the Sacred," will be

    presented by Fr. Kopacek Sept. 26.

c. The parishes will be co-sponsors for a Rachel's Vineyard Retreat Feb. 25-27,

    2011 at American Martyrs.

d. We have received permission to use Fr. Michael Campbell-Johnston's new book,

    In the Midst of Noise, for a 30-day online retreat this fall.

 

C. Young Adults (Strategic Plan E.3.e)

 

1. I am making an effort to form a First Tuesday marriage enrichment group for

    younger couples this fall.

2. Amy Hoyer and I are planning to convene a young adult core group to discuss

    other opportunities for single and married persons ages 25 to 40.  I will be

    offering the opportunity for a young adult faith-sharing or bible study group.

 

D. Social Concerns (Strategic Plan L.3)

 

1. Social Concerns and Social Justice

a. Fran Fuller from the Waterloo Catholic Worker House will facilitate a JustFaith

    study group this fall if a sufficient number of people enroll.  An information

    meeting is scheduled for Sept. 9 at Sacred Heart.

b. I will be inviting members of the parish social concerns committees and other

    parishioners to participate in the next Poverty Simulation, Oct. 1 at Allen

    College.

c. Sr. Nancy Schreck OSF will present the Advent Social Justice Retreat Dec. 4.

2. Interreligious Dialogue

a. Visits to the local Islamic Center and mosque are scheduled for August 27 and

    Sept. 3.

E. AFF Outreach, Administration and Communication (Strategic Plan L.1.c)

 

1. A insert advertising fall adult formation, enrichment and spiritual growth

    opportunities will be in the Aug. 28-29 parish bulletins.

2. We have received a grant from the Kucera Center at Loras College to help

    underwrite part of the costs of the Sunday afternoon mini-retreat series this fall

    and next spring.

3. I attended a training workshop for Early Catholic Family Life Aug. 14 in St. Paul.
4. An explanation of our fee policy for adult formation programs is posted on the
