LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES IN MAY
 

Catholic Forum Will Discuss the Pope's Visit

When all is said and done, what difference will Pope Benedict's recent visit have on the Church in America?  What impact will it have on individual Catholics?  The Catholic Parishes in Waterloo will host a discussion on the Pope's recent U.S. visit on Wednesday, May 21, 6:30-8:00pm in the church hall at St. Edward Parish.  Fr. Jerry Kopacek, pastor of St. Edward Parish, and Dave Cushing, director of adult formation for the Catholic parishes, will explore highlights of the Pope's visit and the major themes of the Pope's talks.

Study Circles on Racism and Race Relations

The Catholic Parishes in Waterloo and New City Ministries will co-sponsor a five-week, inter-racial study circle on "Racism and Race Relations".  The study circle will be faciliated by professional facilitators and will help participants examine personal experiences and perceptions about race, the nature of the race problem, what can be done, and what public policies are needed.  The study circle will meet on a day/time to be chosen by the participants.  Enrollment is limited.  Suggested registration fee is $50.00.

Stewardship of the Earth Bible Study Series Planned

If you’re interested in climate change and other environmental issues, “Stewardship of the Earth” is a five-week bible study designed to help you appreciate the biblical foundation of environmental stewardship.  This is a highly reflective experience which will be scheduled on a day/time to be chosen by the participants.

John Haught Featured at Prairiewoods May 16-17

Dr. John Haught, Senior Fellow of Science and Religion at Woodstock Theological Center/ Georgetown University, will be the featured speaker at two events sponsored by Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality Center May 16-17 in Cedar Rapids.  Dr. Haught will speak on "What's Really Going on in the Universe?" May 16, 7:00-9:00pm, and "Evolution and Faith--What's at Stake?" May 17, 9:00am-3:30pm.  Both events will take place at Hallagan Education Center, Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.

Canterbury Forum Speaker Will Explore Interfaith Dialog

Dr. Haught will be the featured speaker May 18 at the Canterbury Forum at St. Luke Episcopal Church in Cedar Falls.  The talk begins at 7:30pm. in Will hall.  It is free and open to the public.

'Speaking of Faith' Will Focus on Catholics

"The Beauty and Challenge of Being Catholic" is the topic on the May 4 edition of the National Public Radio program, "Speaking of Faith."  The program profiles nine U.S. Catholics who discuss what being Catholic means to them.  The program is broadcast on 10:00-11:00am on KUNI.  You can download the audio in various formats and/or read comments from listeners on what it means to be Catholic at:

Paulists Offer Course on Faithful Citizenship

The Paulist National Catholic Evangelization Association will offer a six-week online course on Faithful Citizenship.  The course will explore Catholic participation in politics as a form of evangelization.  Instructor Dr. Georgia Masters Keightley will demonstrate how Catholics can use the basic moral principles set out in Catholic social teaching to analyze and address the political and social issues facing our country and our world today.  The course opens May 5; lessons begin May 12.  There is a discount for registrations before May 6.  Information at:

Listening Session for Inactive Catholics and Catholic Seekers

A “Listening Session” for inactive, alienated, discouraged and former Catholics will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 7:00pm at Kimball Ridge Center, Waterloo.  This listening session is designed for any Catholic or former Catholic who wants to talk about their relationship with the Church and their experiences in the Church.

Mt. Mercy Series Focuses on Bible as a Work of Mercy

“Reading the Bible as a Work of Mercy” is the title of the Scripture on the Hill summer series at Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids.  The five-week program will meet on evenings, 7:00-8:30pm in Betty Cherry Hertiage Hall on the Mt. Mercy campus June 18, 25, July 2, 9 and 16.  Bill Mulcahey, Director of Campus Ministry, will be the presenter.  Registration of $75 includes the text which will be used.

Catholic Worker Farm Plans Merton Retreat in June

New Hope Catholic Worker Farm near Dubuque will sponsor a weekend retreat June 20-22 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of Thomas Merton.  The theme of the retreat is "Mystical and Political: Thomas Merton's Journey Toward Integration."  It will include talks and discussion, prayer, and a visit to the Trappist Abbey.  Cost is free but enrollment is limited.  Enclosed space in the barn is available for overnight accommodations.  New Hope Catholic Worker Farm is located nine miles south of Dubuque.

Retreat for Sexual Abuse Victims June 27-29 at American Martyrs

Hope and Healing Ministries of the Diocese of Davenport will sponsor a “Committed to Freedom” retreat for persons wounded by sexual abuse June 27-29 at American Martyrs Retreat House in Cedar Falls. This weekend retreat helps participants experience God’s love, identify spiritual tools to move beyond the damage left by abuse, and develop a strategy for healthy living.   It is appropriate for individuals at any stage of recovery.

Mid-Week Retreat for Men and Women at American Martyrs

American Martyrs Retreat House will sponsor a Mid-week Retreat for women and men June 10-12 conducted by Fr.; Ken Glaser,   The theme is "I am with you always."  Director: Fr. Ken Glaser,  Director of St. Stephen the Witness Catholic Student Center in Cedar Falls.  A great way to begin the summer.  Offering: $105 (includes meals, and accommodations).

 Schedule of Summer Opportunities at Shalom Retreat Center

Shalom Retreat Center in Dubuque announces the following opportunities in June:
  Discipleship as a Way of Life.  June 8-14.  This week-long retreat will be conducted by Fr. Anthony gittins, CSSp, professor of Theological Anthropology at Chicago Theological Union.  The retreat will explore some of the components of discipleship and look at profiles of disciples in the New Testament.  $75 deposit is due June 3.
•  An Evening of Care – for individuals who have an ill or disabled loved one.  Tuesday, June 10, 7:00pm.  Presented by Kathy Davis, John Ervolino and June Price.  Each of the presenters is living with the reality of a loved one who is seriously ill or disabled.  They will speak from the perspective of how this affects their lives and how they cope with the challenge of caring for a seriously ill loved one.  Offering: $8. Registration deadline: June 9.
  Like the Air We Breathe: An Approach to the Spiritual Life. June 15-20.  This five-day retreat will be conducted by Fr. Albert Haase, OFM, adjunct professor of Spirituality at Chicago Theological Union and the School for Spirituality at Mayslake Ministries.  The retreat will examine key themes in the spiritual life: the True Self, the False Self, growth towards freedom, prayer, discernment and the spiritual journey.  $40 deposit is due June 9.
•  The History of Christian Spirituality – a retreat conducted by Albert Haase, OFM. Saturday, June 21. 9:00a-4:00p. This retreat will explore how Christians have experienced and expressed their relationship to God and others and discover the origins of some of our spiritual beliefs and practices.  Offering: $50 (includes Participant’s Guide).  Registration deadline: June 18.
•  In Communion with All of Creation.  June 29-July 5. This week-long retreat will be conducted by Sr. Lucy Slinger FSPA, Ecospirituality Educator at Viterbo University in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.  The retreat will be an invitation to open mind, body and spirit to the deeper presence of the Divine Mystery in all of Creation.  $40 deposit is due June 24.
•  Wholeness and Holiness Retreat for Women.  June 29-July 6. Conducted by Sr. Margie Hosch OSF, a member of the Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and Sr. Connie Fahey FSM, a graduate of the Sursum Corda spiritual direction formation program.  This retreat will use multiple strategies to help participants open their minds and hearts to emotional and psychological wholeness by addresses the crises and traumas which shape beliefs, feelings, behaviors and self-identity.  Consists of four daily one-hour session of individual spiritual direction, individual counseling, shared prayer and group counseling.  Enrollment is limited.

Shalom Retreat Center in Dubuque announces the following opportunity in July:
•  Silent Directed Retreat.  July 6-13.  Directors include Fr. James Starbuck, Bernie Dansart, Sr. Margaret Jungers OSF and Sr. Dorothy Schwendinger OSF.  Participants will meet daily with a retreat director and participate in daily opportunities for Liturgy and common prayer, solitude and nature.  Tai Chi is optional.  $40 deposit is due June 6.
•  Learning to Hang on by a Hare – a Day of Reflection presented by Gerarda Lahey Keppler.  Saturday, July 19. 9:30a-3:00p.  Here is an opportunity to spend a day exploring a course toward peace, self-acceptance and real love based on the children’s classic, The Velveteen Rabbit.  Offering: $35 (includes lunch).  Registration deadline: July 15.

Shalom Retreat Center in Dubuque announced the following opportunities in August:
•  Finding Hope Through the Grace of God – a day of reflection presented by Fran and Marilyn Riley.  Saturday, August 9, 9:30a-3:00p.  The Rileys will share their personal journey through distress and turmoil and how the power of prayer and the Holy Spirit led them to a greater purpose in life.  Offering: $35 (includes lunch).  Registration deadline: August 4.
•  Clare of Assisi – a day of reflection facilitated by Sr. Margaret Jungers OSF and Sr. Eileen Miller OSF.  Thursday, August 14. 9:30a-3:00p.  The life and miracles surrounding Clare will be celebrated with song, bread and storytelling.  Participants will be inspired and challenged as they probe the miracles of healing, feeding and protecting which surround Clare’s life.  Offering: $30 (includes lunch).  Registration deadline: August 11.

Baptism Preparation
•  The monthly preparation program for parents planning to baptize an infant or small children will be held on May 10 at 9:30am in Putz Hall (rectory basement) at Blessed Sacrament Parish.

Book Club
•  The Catholic Readers Book Club meets on the first Monday evening of the month at 7:00pm at Queen of Peace rectory.  For information call Bev Byford at 319-232-1326. 

Adult Study Groups
• Fr. Jerry Kopacek’s monthly study group is examining the scriptural foundation and historical development of the Eucharist.  It meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:15pm in the church hall at St. Edward Parish.

Faith-Sharing Groups
• Faith-sharing groups meet regularly throughout the year on Tuesday mornings, 9:30 to 11:00am at St. Edward; Tuesday mornings, 8:30-10:00am and Thursday mornings, 8:30-10:00am at Blessed Sacrament, and Thursday mornings, 8:30-10:00am at Queen of Peace. Contact the parish offices for details.

Marriage Enrichment
First Tuesday, a support and enrichment program for married couples of any age or faith, meets at 7:00pm on the first Tuesday evening of the month in the Clark Building community room, 527 Park Lane, Waterloo.

Spiritual Discernment
•  Companions on the Journey provides individuals with an opportunity for regular spiritual discernment in the context of a small faith-sharing group.  Each group of four to six persons meets monthly in a comfortable, confidential and safe environment with a professional spiritual director.
